Boots and ballet

This little blush dress always reminds me of something that a ballerina might wear.

There's a bit of an ethereal quality to it - the "barely there" colour, the ribbon waistband, the delicate pleats - that makes it look like a good match for some classical music and toe shoes!!  I decided instead to give it some edge by pairing it with my knee-high platform boots; and some extra texture by adding these crochet tights.

And speaking of texture...isn't this cropped cardi from Kersh so cool?!  Its mix of different yarns makes for a fun "pop" against the neutral dress; and the extra layer was certainly needed to keep the autumn chill away!!

P.S.  Don't forget to participate in my "Twelve Posts of Christmas" giveaway by leaving a comment...see details in yesterday's post!!

Twelve Posts of Christmas!

I am hosting a contest for all my loyal readers...just in time for Christmas!!

Including today's "bonus" post, I will have a total of twelve new looks on my blog before the big day. If you would like a chance - or a dozen! - to win this handmade (by me!) sterling silver, peridot and seed pearl bracelet, I have a very simple request of you:

Leave me a comment referring specifically to at least one particular part of each day's look (in other words, a generic "I like this outfit" won't do!!) And that's it!! A qualifying comment for each blog post, including today's, gets you one ballot; if you leave twelve comments, that's a total of twelve ballots!!

I will let the lucky winner know who they are on Christmas Day, so please be sure to leave me your contact info with your first comment!!

Good luck...and I hope you enjoy my "Twelve Posts of Christmas!!"  (A very Happy Thanksgiving to my readers in the United States, too!!)

The real me

If I had to choose a single look to summarize my most "real me" style esthetic, this could very well be it!!

I concede that I'm a bit of a chameleon when it comes to my personal style - I like to switch things up from day to day depending on my mood - and I think that's probably true for many women. But I will almost always have either an edgy or a bohemian element in there somewhere...and this particular look, to me, has the perfect balance of both.

The vegan leather jeans (from Free People) have a "rockerish" feel; while my patchwork Buffalo sweater (which is probably 10 years old!) couldn't be more hippie-chic. And then there's that ultra-wide scoop neckline...a very girly detail that makes sure I don't veer too far into "tomboy" territory; because, you know, I'm really not!!

A little starstruck

I don't do a lot of "graphic" when it comes to my personal style; but every once in a while, something - like the stars on this cotton sweater from Garage - will catch my eye and not let go!!

Stars and crescent moons have been resonating with me for a few years now, so when I saw this hanging in the store, I just couldn't leave it behind...the heather grey and white colour combination was an added bonus!!

I wore it several times this past summer with some faded skinny jeans and sandals, but today was my first time styling it with this coated black denim mini and my Danier moto jacket. Tights now finally, as well...I guess I had to break them out at some point!!

Railroaded

Believe it or not, this particular look was not planned specifically for this particular location!!

My little railroad-striped skirt is actually one of those quintessential warm weather pieces I decided to mix in with some stuff that is rather more "seasonal"... like my extra-cozy fleece-trimmed boots from Steve Madden; and my prized Diesel car coat!! (The coat is actually a boy's style, but I simply could not resist its awesomeness when I found it last year at - you guessed it! - Winners!!)

I was actually going to add some patterned tights to finish things off; but when my husband told me the day was feeling quite mild temperature-wise, I thought "what the heck!" and went without...between the boots and the coat, I was definitely in no danger of getting chilled today!!

A different animal

I thought I'd rattle things up today...with a little snake (print, that is!!)

These Dollhouse jeans are a fun switch from my usual blue denim skinnies; they are as comfortable and stretchy as leggings, and tuck easily into my knee-high tan boots for a nice, streamlined look.

When I first saw this warm grey sweater's "inside out" side seams and unique horizontal cables, it appealed to me right away; but I was a little less sure about the generous cowl, since I usually prefer a more open neckline. I'm happy to say that it ended up being the perfect toasty-warm choice for an afternoon of browsing Christmas ornaments at a local garden shop!!

And this bag will be making appearances with some frequency over the coming months, I think...it's my newest acquisition from Canadian handbag designer Matteo Mio (my gift to myself, care of the Circle Craft Market over the Remembrance Day long weekend!!)

Flattery

I'm realizing that one of the greatest things about being part of the "personal style" blogging community is the way we influence, inspire, and validate each other's sartorial choices.

And really, that's the point: our photos say "look at how I put this gorgeous pair of shoes with these particular jeans;" and our comments confirm "I love how you styled that pencil skirt with a basic tee!"

The expression says that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...but I think it goes further and deeper than that.  It's about sharing a mutual love of fashion, and the joy that looking at a really pretty, or "cool," or uniquely styled look can bring. It's about finding new and different ways of expressing ourselves and our personalities. It's about experimenting!!

So today I'm admitting - nay, proudly declaring! - that this look was most definitely inspired by Atlantic-Pacific's Blair Eadie (her blog is in my blog roll on the right, if you want to check her out.)  I've put my own spin on it, naturally...but I hope I did you proud, Blair!!

Endless summer

November's in the air and I don't care!!

Seriously...I don't ever remember being able to do bare legs almost halfway through this month; Vancouver weather, I've really been loving you lately!!

I bought this QSW (Quiksilver) striped slip dress on clearance just last week with the intention of saving it for next year; but you know the feeling of having something new hanging in your closet that you just can't wait to wear?!

That's what happened here! I've styled it with my Frye harness boots to give the look a bit of weight (and edge!) as well as my woolly blue cardigan; after all, it is November! And I think my fringy suede Steve Madden bag is the perfect little boho finish!!
