Texturize me

If you've read my "about me" page, then you know that I started this blog as a kind of personal style diary...a way for me to record all the outfits I so love to put together for those days when I'm not wearing my workday uniform.

And it's been quite interesting what I've learned about my style preferences since I started this visual journey just a little over a year ago...that expression "a picture is worth a thousand words" is very true!!

One thing that's really become apparent to me is that even though I may not do a lot of colour on a regular basis, I am - without a doubt - a HUGE fan of textures!!  Take this new bag that I brought home from Vancouver's Circle Craft Christmas Market this year...couldn't you just die over all that scrumptious furriness?!

Add to that my woolly, fringy, Free People sweater-coat and a tasselled lariat necklace...and I'm totally in tactile heaven over here!!  (Can you tell?!)

Denim story

No go-to jeans for me today...I opted to get my denim "fix" with my thrifted pencil skirt instead!!

This utilitarian blue fabric sure has come a looong way, don't you think?!  It was first used in the late 1800's by a certain Levi Strauss (does the name sound familiar?!) to create durable trousers for mine-workers...and the riveted and double-stitched pants were quickly adopted as the uniform of choice by American cowboys and ranch-hands, as well.

But it really wasn't until the 1950's that jeans started morphing from strictly "workwear" to all-out "fashion statement."  And now, of course, we can find all kinds of denim pieces that are appropriate for virtually every occasion...from the beach, to a casual day at the office, to a fancy cocktail hour!!

Since a visit to the mall was on my agenda for this afternoon - what's new, right?! - I decided to dress down my denim skirt a little with my favourite leather beanie, a funky cropped cardigan, and these spike-heeled but surprisingly comfortable booties.  Christmas shopping mayhem, here I come!!

Christmas countdown

Although I was born and raised in Canada - Toronto, to be exact! - my family always followed the German holiday tradition of opening gifts on Christmas Eve...which means, dear readers, that the "biggest" day of the year is exactly four weeks away for me!!  Woohoo!!

Kind of hard to believe, considering that our weather here in Vancouver was positively spring-like today!! With some blog reading to catch up (and my favourite soy chai latte on my mind!) I had an early start this morning at our local Starbucks...and boy, was I ever surprised when my husband picked me up a couple of hours later!!

I'll venture to say that I was actually a little bit overdressed in my fleecy Steve Madden boots and denim jacket...although indoors, it had been pretty cold.  I think the sunshine and balmy temperatures might have fooled that Starbucks air-conditioner into starting again!!

Snow and Christmas go hand-in-hand for many people, I know...but honestly?!  I'd be perfectly happy with a day like today on repeat!!

Pirate pup

Remember those faux bird-skull earrings my husband brought home for me from the Shill Shack when he visited Vancouver Island this past June??  Well, he also had this one-of-a-kind red plaid skirt tucked into his suitcase!!

To say he was anxious for me to model it right away is an understatement(!)...but since a piece in tartan-patterned wool doesn't exactly work for the height of summer, my little "pirate pup" has been waiting patiently in my closet for the perfect moment to debut!!

One part whimsical, one part edgy, this is definitely not a mass-production piece; I only wish that fitted skirts were just a bit easier to wear.  Am I the only one who finds that they tend to twist around the body with the wearer's movements??

Regardless, if you're a fan of the unique and slightly off-beat - from clothing to jewellery and accessories - then may I suggest a visit to the Shill Shack on Etsy!!  I can't promise you another dog-and-crossbones skirt...but I'm certain you'll find something that has you feeling like a cool cat!!

(Please note:  the skirt was a gift, but I was not otherwise compensated for this blog post.)

Scratch that!

For me, a huge part of what makes personal style so much fun is having the opportunity, on a regular basis, to "mix it up" in the fashion department!!

But if I ever did resort to some sort of formula for getting dressed on my days off, then a look like this would surely be it!!  Skinny jeans??  Check!!  Comfortable booties??  Check!!  And to top it all off, an oversized sweater that's basically a cozy blanket in disguise!!

This particular cardigan holds a special place in my heart because of its colour - it's such an interesting combination of grey and chartreuse! - and because the wool blend makes it just a little bit scratchy!!  Yes, I said scratchy!!  I've always suspected that I'm one of the very few people on this planet that actually likes scratchy wool (a little quirk I inherited from my dad!!)

But now, dear readers, I really am curious...are you a fan only of the softest knits; or do you sometimes enjoy a slightly, shall we say, stronger texture??  Please let me know with a comment below!!

Late bloomer

Believe it or not, before I started "StyleIsMyPudding" last September, I had absolutely no Internet presence...and very little online experience either.

My husband and I didn't have a computer until he started working from home about three years ago; and my own job didn't computerize much before that.  I've only had my iPhone since March; before that, I managed just fine with my little flip-phone.

This meant that until very recently, things like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram were totally foreign concepts to me.  I realized very quickly that social media is a huge part of building a blog following, but it's definitely not second nature to me to "share" my life in a moment-by-moment fashion...I'm always forgetting that I actually have a camera built into that fancy new cell phone of mine!!

But as my blogger friend Veronika ("By the Shore") reminded readers in her recent Blog Workshop post, staying true to who we are - without pressuring ourselves - is probably one of the most important things we can do as we work towards building our own little virtual communities.

So even though you may not get many glimpses "behind the scenes" from me, dear readers, as a dedicated shopper and personal style-ista, you can definitely expect the outfit posts to keep on coming!!  And I'm thrilled to share them with you!!

Back to school

I'm the first to admit that I am sooo not a "real" tomboy...nor have I ever been one.  Not by a long shot!!

Getting grimy didn't appeal to me even at a very young age; when I was still in school, the only physical-education activity that interested me was gymnastics...mostly because it didn't involve the risk of grass stains and dirt streaks!!  (Unfortunately, I also have a fear of falling; which pretty much ensured that the uneven bars and balance beam weren't going to work out for me either!!)

But flash forward to today, and voila!!  Nowadays there's something that I absolutely adore about being (or at least looking like) a tomboy!!  The only essential??  Making sure that my ensemble includes at least one feminine element...and my black, cut-out booties - edgy as they are - definitely qualify!!

Seriously though...didn't this combination of boyfriend jeans and layered tops turn out super cute?!  I'm really curious to hear if you agree!!
