The bees knees

I've mentioned before that I have this weird (I'll admit it!) aversion to wearing socks...the only kind that you might see me in are the over-knee variety!!

I'm honestly not sure why I find most socks so unappealing; maybe it's the vaguely "athletic" vibe they often have, or the way they tend to "cut off" the line of the leg in rather unflattering places.  Whatever it is, though...I'm definitely not the biggest fan of this particular type of leg-wear!!

But when they come up over the knees??  Suddenly, the feeling is altogether different; a little fresh...and most definitely not frumpy!!  They were the perfect option for adding just a bit of extra coverage (and interest!) to this leopard-print dress, mustard cardi and suede boots combination.

When it comes to matters of fashion, however, I will always heed the advice to "never say never."  Why?? Because lately I've seen some ankle-sock-and-statement-shoe combinations that have me asking myself the question...do I dare?!  ;)

Movie night

Am I the only one who was a little underwhelmed by the gowns that walked the Oscar red carpet this year, dear readers??

There were some pretty dresses to be sure...but none of them really took my breath away; kind of disappointing for the night that LuckyShops bills as "the most glamorous evening of the year!!"

Of course, the opportunity to wear any one of those designer confections would still be an absolute dream-come-true for me...and very probably for many of you, too!!  They're genuine works of art that just happen to be conceived from yards of fabric instead of paint and canvas; and like pieces that might be displayed in a gallery, I can appreciate them even if I don't really "get" them!!

Have any of you ever been fortunate enough to play princess in a truly over-the-top creation worthy of the Oscars??  Maybe you even have one taking pride of place in your personal wardrobe this very minute?? Please share!!

Inside out

Even though much of Canada (and our neighbour to the south!) is still struggling with what must surely feel like a new Ice Age, here in Vancouver our weather continues to be positively spring-like!!

So spring-like, in fact, that I thought I'd better take my midi sweater-dress out for one more afternoon ...before our temperatures get too warm and I have to pack it away for the season!!

I'm doubtful that there's anything easier - or comfier! - to wear than a dress like this; you know that cozy blanket that you love to snuggle into, with a cup of tea and a really good book??  This is that blanket, only it's okay to take it out of the house and enjoy your tea at a cafĂ© instead!!

I've even gone "handsfree" today - care of my studded, leopard backpack - to manage both my cup and my favourite magazine without juggling!!

Dots and dashes

If you're a regular visitor to my blog - and of course I hope you are! - you'll know by now that I'm a huge fan of tone-on-tone looks!!

Outfits that combine pieces sharing a similar colour palette are far from boring...if you turn instead to liberal doses of pattern and texture to create some visual interest.  The greys and beiges of my boots, bag, jeans and vest are all quite neutral; but the stripes, dots, faux-fur and pebbled leather create an ensemble that's fabulous...not flat!!

And as an added bonus, a monochromatic outfit (even a rather casual one like mine!) is pretty much guaranteed to instantly appear "pulled together" and sophisticated...a vibe that can be challenging to achieve with a more flashy combination!!

So...does this mean I'm giving up on adding the occasional pop of colour to my personal style choices?? You'd only need to check out my "Lady in red" post to know that isn't true!!  ;)

P.S.  My friend Dawn of Fashion Should Be Fun has been hosting a weekly link-up on her blog called "Fun Fashion Friday"...and she's inviting everyone to participate!!  Don't hesitate to visit!!

Lunch lady

As you can see, my new Elvis & Kresse bag has barely left my hands since it arrived by courier last week, dear readers!!

Today it came with me on a lunch date with my husband at our favourite Indian restaurant; we got a compliment from the hostess that we were "a very nice couple"...but who wouldn't be, with tummies so pleasantly full after a wonderful meal?!

By the time we left the restaurant, the day had clouded over and become a little chilly; I really could have used a coat of some sort, but I had stubbornly refused to wear one (this outfit was just too darn cute to cover up!!)  Besides, I'd always heard that we lose most of our body heat from the top - our heads, in other words! - and I had that situation covered with my felted-wool, flower-embellished hat!!

And isn't the acid wash of my denim pencil skirt such a cool throwback to the eighties??  That particular era is not usually on my style radar...but by now you know that I'm always willing to experiment a little!!

Lady in red

A couple of weeks ago, I was thrilled to learn that I was the winner of a wonderfully unique Elvis & Kresse bag...care of the giveaway hosted by my blogger friend Catherine of Not Dressed As Lamb!!

Elvis & Kresse is a British company that repurposes decommissioned fire hoses - yes, you really did read that correctly! - to make the most amazing bags, wallets, laptop cases and other accessories!!  Most of the pieces comes in the signature colour of the aforementioned fire hoses; so perfect for me, since I've been thinking about adding a bag in this very shade to my collection for a while now!!

Me??  A red bag??  I know I rarely wear red...but I've wanted to put some more "pop" in my closet's colour palette; and this top-handled box bag - with its perfect combination of modern yet ladylike shape and edgy textile - was like the answer to my personal style prayer!!

Yep, I have a feeling that this little prize of mine is going to find itself "out and about" quite a lot, dear readers!!  :)

Fresh cargo

So, dear readers...after our recent discussion about whether shopping qualifies as a hobby (the consensus? - of course it does!) I know that most of us don't really need an excuse to indulge!!  But isn't it nice to have a legitimate reason every once in a while?!

Like when I pulled out my military-inspired pants last weekend as an outfit possibility...and discovered that they were way too big!!  I guess that all my evenings with my hands busy at the keyboard - instead of in the cookie jar! - have had a bit of a "side effect"!!

I'm absolutely not mentioning that I might have over-compensated by purchasing not one, but two pairs of replacement cargos (oops!)...because today I just want to focus on this awesome "skinny" version that I found on sale at Aritzia!!  I couldn't resist staying with the theme by debuting them with a camo-patterned tank; and then I girl-ified the whole look with some high heels and this drapey, mustard-coloured cardi ...which, ahem, is also new!!

And speaking of new, little "Wolfie" already seems to be feeling quite at home with us!!  He's navigating around our condo remarkably well considering his blindness...and he and Badger are slowly getting acquainted.  Hopefully, best friends in the making!!  :)

New beginnings

I'm going to keep things short and sweet today, dear readers, because I have a new little distraction at home...the Faulkner Family has expanded by one!!

My husband and I adopted a ferret from our local shelter yesterday morning!!  We've been debating the idea of giving Badger another brother or sister after we lost Griffin and Flora just before Christmas ...but because of his fragile health and blindness, we decided that a rambunctious baby would probably not be in his best interest.

So now we have "Wolfie!!"  He's a senior ferret - and blind as well - who was surrendered to the shelter when his previous owner no longer felt able to care for him.

I'll be posting some photos on Instagram in the next few days, of course...but in the mean time, we'll be spending some extra bonding time with Wolfie while we get him settled in!!

P.S.  My hubby is not a fan of the name "Wolfie"...and I'm not thrilled with "Felix," the name he came with.  Cast your votes, dear readers; which name do you prefer?!
