Coast to coast: Vintage coat with boyfriend jeans and sequinned sweater

We'll finally be arriving in St. Andrews, New Brunswick later today - after an overnight stay in Toronto on Tuesday - but of course I couldn't leave you hanging without an outfit post!!

Because there are no direct flights from west coast to east coast, the trip across Canada is a long one...if my husband and I hadn't opted for that YYZ stopover, we could have expected to be en route (both by air and by car) for a minimum of 11 hours straight!!  Not the best scenario for me after my deep vein thrombosis last year...I have doctor's orders to stretch my legs as often as possible.

And just so you're prepared, Friday's post won't feature a New Brunswick backdrop yet either; I already know that I'll be super busy catching up with my family...so I put together one more set of outfit pics for you before we left Vancouver.

But there definitely will be photo opportunities happening while we're visiting; and you never know, I might even be featuring a special guest or two!!

Time capsule: denim skirt with a plaid shirt and quilted pleather jacket

Tomorrow is "D-Day" for our trip to New Brunswick...and yippee!!  My wardrobe-on-the-go is  finally figured out!!

I've noticed a lot of chat in the blogosphere lately about "capsule wardrobes," which involve curating a set number of pieces - usually including footwear but excluding special occasion items - for each season; once you've reached your quota, the shopping fun is over...until the next season rolls around.

Packing for a holiday is a little like that, isn't it??  You put together a selection of things from your closet that you can mix and match for the maximum number of outfit possibilities; knowing that once you've decided, you're going to be stuck with your choices...even if you suddenly change your mind!!

If I'm sounding a little negative about the "capsule" concept, I want to reassure you that I actually do think it's a terrific idea...for someone else!!  I love shopping way too much to set these kinds of restrictions for myself on an regular basis; that being said, I'm admittedly full of anticipation about sharing my trip-wardrobe planning success (or lack thereof!) with you in upcoming outfit posts!!  Be sure to stay tuned!!

No frills: slouchy cargo pants and a fuzzy sweater!

Don't you agree that sometimes "simple is best," dear readers??

I'm sure that I'm always going to love a great bohemian look - with scarves and fringes and paisley and beading.  And the sculls and studs of a rockerish outfit have been my "thing" for a long time, too.

Still, I can't deny the appeal of throwing a much more minimalistic ensemble into the sartorial mix every once in a while!!  My sweater and soft pants combination in neutral tones is about as "bare bones" as it gets; no statement necklace, embellished bag or attention-grabbing shoes in sight.

But is it boring?!  I certainly don't think so; although now I'm anxious to hear if your favourite outfits require all the bells and whistles...or if you sometimes enjoy going the "simple" route, too!!

Going native: tank dress, cropped cardigan and major accessories!

So our trip to New Brunswick is coming up veeery quickly now - I can't believe that my hubby and I are on our way next Tuesday! - and I'm starting to panic just a little.  What the heck am I going to pack?!

My sister lives in what I would consider to be the "country;" while I am definitely way more of a city girl...with the wardrobe to match!!  As much as an ensemble like I'm wearing today works for an afternoon spent hanging out at Starbucks here in Vancouver, I'm worried that it might have me looking (and feeling!) a little out of place on the small-town streets of St. Andrews!!

Not to mention my shoe situation!!  My Mom keeps telling me to leave my major heels at home; good advice, I'm sure...but if you're a regular visitor to my blog, you'll know that doesn't leave me with all that many footwear options!!

Will you help me out with some packing advice, dear readers??  What pieces do you recommend I bring along??  Who knows, you might end up seeing your outfit suggestion posted right here a few weeks from now...with a New Brunswick backdrop, of course!!  ;)

Rock it out: Striped skinny jeans with a peplum top and Chanel-style jacket!

Hubby and I leave a week from tomorrow for our trip to New Brunswick, dear readers...and I'm actually starting to get kind of excited!!

My sister and brother-in-law have lived in the little resort town of St. Andrews for 10 years, but this will be my very first visit to the eastern edge of Canada.  We're having a family reunion of sorts to celebrate my parents' fiftieth Wedding Anniversary; and since my sister and her husband run their own bakery and catering business (you can check them out on the Bread Runners Bakery Facebook page!) meeting up in Toronto - where my Mom and Dad live - simply isn't possible.  So it's the perfect excuse for us to visit them in NB instead!!

Of course, any holiday wouldn't be nearly as enjoyable without a new vacation wardrobe to take along (wink wink!)...which means I've been keeping myself extra-busy at our local shopping mall.  The tally so far??  Two pairs of shoes, a dress, a skirt, a jumpsuit (I've decided to take the leap!) and a top (yes! I managed to find one that I like!!)

By no means will everything be coming to New Brunswick with me - the pair of strappy sandals I bought, for example, wouldn't be practical in the snow! - but there will most definitely be some blog photo shoots happening while we're away!!  ;)

P.S. Are you familiar yet with the WabiSabi Project??  My amazingly generous friend Dana has made it a mission to introduce her readers to personal style from all around the world right on her blog "Dana Loves Fashion and Music."  You might see a familiar face(!) or two...but you're also guaranteed to meet someone new!!  And with your permission, she'll gladly include you in her next edition!!  :)

Hat trick: Boyfriend jeans with a plaid blouse and grandpa cardigan

I consider myself to be a reasonably accomplished shopper...but the one piece that tends to challenge me regularly??  The basic "top!!"

Jeans, sweaters, dresses, and skirts are rarely an issue; I almost always find something new to love with every visit to my neighbourhood mall!!  But when the hunt is about a straightforward top (like a tank or a blouse) it's much more likely that I'll return home empty-handed.

I'm not sure why I'm so fussy about tops...but I am!!  There are so many details that need to be exactly right; from the fabric, to the neckline, to the type of sleeves.  The fact that I fell head-over-heels for this little plaid number is really no big surprise, though!!  The blouse isn't new -  you've seen it before in my   "A little flare" post - but today it adds a perfect touch of colour and pattern to my tomboy combination of distressed jeans and slouchy cardi...

...all topped off (hehe!) with this adorable, flower-embellished hat!!

Dark horse: what to wear for a day-long road trip

So life goes on, dear readers...it's been a week today since my husband and I said good-bye to our sweet Badger.

Distractions have helped; the veterinary clinic where I work has been busy lately (no time for Instagram during my lunch break!)...and hubby took me for a day trip to Washington State for some cross-border shopping, which simply wasn't doable while we had a ferret at home that needed hand-feeding every few hours.

And what could be better than leggings and a blanket-like cardi when you're going to be on the road for several hours??  My "chauffeur" likes to unroll the car windows just when I start feeling really warm and toasty, but the faux-leather and wool combination did a good job of keeping me cozy...even with a draft - excuse me, a breeze - making it's way through our vehicle!!

Plus, I got a compliment on my "dark horse" ensemble from one of the very hip sales associates at Nordstrom...and that's never a bad thing, am I right?!

Afterglow: Printed chiffon dress, booties, and long cardigan

I wish I could say that smiles were already coming so naturally to me...but these photos were taken before our little family - once again - experienced a loss last Wednesday.

styling a printed chiffon dress with booties and a long cardigan

My husband and I have had to say good-bye to three of our fur-babies within the past four months; and unfortunately, the grief doesn't get any easier with "practice."  Once more, there've been a lot of tears...and a lot of memories of Badger (and Griffin and Flora, too) revisited.

But, almost imperceptibly, the sorrow does ease.  After all, we have Wolfie to love...and we are already putting out feelers for other ferrets that are looking for a new home.

Would life be easier - and sometimes less heartbreaking - without the inclusion of four-legged family members??  It likely would be...but even in the afterglow of this sadness, I'm not yet willing to give it a try.

Circle of life

I have such unhappy news to share with you again, dear readers...our little trooper Badger, who rallied so bravely after becoming seriously ill a few weeks before Christmas, has finally lost his battle with cancer.

He required constant nursing all these past months...which was exactly what my husband and I needed to help us recover from Griffin's passing back in December, and then the unexpected loss of Flora only a week later.

I'm such a firm believer that everything in this world of ours happens for a reason, even if that reason is difficult to fathom at the time.  Badger stayed with us just long enough for our grief over losing his brother and sister to mellow into sweet memories...and to allow our rescue ferret Wolfie to find his way to us, so we wouldn't be without a fur-baby to love.

Thank you, darling Badger, for all the joy you brought us with your funny antics these last seven years.  We miss you with all our hearts.
