Trick chicken: flare jeans, baseball tee, and a bandana head wrap

As I'm watching our ferret Fritz do his "chicken dance" while he (very impatiently!) waits for my husband to heat up his meal for him, I realize that it's been a while since I updated you on his progress!!  Shame on me!!

My regular readers will certainly remember that we had to make a midnight trip to the Animal Emergency Hospital back in February when poor Fritzie, who'd been diagnosed with bladder stones only a few weeks earlier, suddenly blocked.

After surgery and a four night stay in the care of our ferret vet, he came home to us with a number of stones very unfortunately still lodged in his urethra...and we've been medicating him ever since with the hope of dissolving them!!  That "chicken dance" I mentioned??  That's our name for the way he gets sooo excited about the medicine-hiding gruel of chicken baby food and water that we trick him with - oops, I mean feed him! - every morning and evening.

And of course we can't have his brother Frecki feeling left out...so he gets his own bowl of (unmedicated) soup right along with Fritz!!  Something tells me that a flat of baby food will stay on our shopping list even after the bladder stone issue is resolved; the "chicken dance" is worth all our repeated explanations in the checkout lineup that no, ferrets actually don't need some fruits and vegetables in their diet as well!!  ;D

Homemaker: acid-washed pencil skirt, floral blouse, and leopard clutch

Because my job at a veterinary clinic has me stuck in scrubs most days of the week (and scrubs, at least in my humble opinion, really aren't all that far removed from pyjamas!) you'll almost never find me wearing anything resembling sweats or pj's in my downtime...even if I'm just planning on staying at home!!

There's plenty of girls I know who can't imagine wearing a dress or skirt for anything but the most special of occasions, and I always have to wonder - where's the fun in that?!  Of course I love my jeans, too... but we women have so many more sartorial options than the average "mainstream" male does; why the heck not take advantage of that a little more often than once or twice a year?!

floral blouse and apricot-coloured hair!

Now I will say that this acid-washed pencil skirt and floral blouse combination wouldn't be an outfit I'd choose if I was planning on spending an afternoon on the couch watching Netflix...but for running some errands??  Bring it on!!

And even though my hubby sometimes grumbles about the time it takes me to get ready to face the day, I also know he appreciates the fact that even after almost 18 years together, I've yet to devolve into shlumpy "housewife" territory!!  ;)

(By the way, I am in no way saying that all "housewife" looks are shlumpy; check out Not Dressed As Lamb's amazing ensemble!!)

Standing still: patterned shirt with skinny jeans and animal-print pumps

What's your relationship with "change," dear readers??  Do you love it...or hate it??

styling a black patterned shirt with faded skinny jeans, animal-print pumps, and a Michael Kors studded bag

Let's be clear here - I'm not talking about the kind of change that jingles around in your pocket or makes your wallet difficult to close!!  It's the other "change" that has been on my mind recently; both what we can control...and what comes our way even though it might be the last thing that we want to deal with.

While some individuals seem to have an enviable ability to roll with the punches when it comes to any and all change, I imagine that the majority would much rather be active decision-makers in at least the big stuff that affects us...like where we live and work.  I think it's smaller things over which the camp generally gets divided; I'm so excited to get a brand new hair look at least every year or two, for example...but I know a lot of women who haven't changed the way they do their 'do in decades!!

If "change is good," as the expression goes, why is it such a challenge for many people to embrace??  Is it a fear of the unknown??  Being genuinely content with the status quo??  Or is it a sad sort of inertia that takes us over and makes us not want to face something new and different??  If any of you know the secret to making "change" a little less daunting, I sure hope you'll take a moment to share!!

Style 3-Play: Harem Shorts Look Three

So here it is, dear readers...my final look (for the time being!) featuring my sort-of-weird-yet-sort-of-cool harem shorts!!

styling harem shorts with a faux-leather peplum top and strappy platform heels

Honestly??  I'm totally stoked by how versatile a piece they've actually turned out to be; especially right now, while the whole "athleisure" trend is still going strong.

These super slouchy jersey shorts are definitely gym-inspired...but by combining them with some strappy platform heels and a faux-leather peplum top like I did today, they're even chic enough for a night on the town!!

Of course I totally understand that this drop-crotch silhouette won't be to everyone's taste...I wasn't even sure it was mine until my style experiment this week!!  If you haven't already, I hope you'll take a moment to check out Look One and Look Two...and to let me know if I've managed to make you a fan!!

Style 3-Play: Harem Shorts Look Two

If you visited here on Monday, then you already know that I've challenged myself to style these slightly "eccentric" harem shorts in three different street-worthy ways this week!!

This second look was my outfit of choice for yet another trip to our go-to garden center; we've been there so often recently that we're actually getting personal greetings from many of the staff!!  This time around, we were looking for some more flowers to add a finishing touch to the last of our twelve balcony rail baskets.  That's a whole lot of plants!!

The good news is that we've earned ourselves the discount coupons we need to make our big ticket purchases when the nursery has its summer sale this June!!  Our live Christmas tree that we moved out to the balcony after the holidays was unfortunately stripped clean of half its needles by some voracious insects...so we've been scoping out a proper replacement!!

For my dear readers that have been patiently awaiting some photos of our outdoor space...please have patience for a little while longer, since I'd really like everything to grow in and fill out before taking you on a pictorial tour!!  In the meantime, remember to stop in again on Friday for my harem shorts grand finale ...and remember to let me know what you think of Look Two!!  :)

Style 3-Play: Harem Shorts Look One

If someone had told me a year ago (or even six months ago!) that I'd be adding a pair of drop-crotch, tie-dye shorts to my wardrobe, I would have told them that they were bonkers!!

styling jersey harem shorts with a v-neck top, floral kimono, and peep-toe wedge booties

Yet here I am!!  And can I just say that as unconventional as they are, I kinda love them?!  I actually bought these jersey shorts with lounging in mind; but since multiple styling options are always a good thing when it comes to any item of clothing, I decided I'd challenge myself to work them into a more "street appropriate" look!!

But then - why stop there??  Why not come up with three ways to take these slouchy harem shorts from pyjama territory to something a bit more fashion forward??

I'm honestly not sure if I'll succeed, dear readers...but I very much hope that you'll return on Wednesday for a boo at Look Two!!  And please take a moment to let me know what you think of this first ensemble (and maybe my new hair colour, as well!!)

Hair raising: striped maxi-skirt, patterned sweatshirt, and drapey cardigan

I'm getting my hair done this afternoon, dear readers!!  Woohoo!!

styling a cropped, patterned sweatshirt with a striped maxi-skirt and drapey cardigan

Even though my hubby most likely disagrees, I'm actually a pretty low key girl when it comes to "personal maintenance"...I've never been to a spa or a tanning salon; I don't get professional massages; and I always do my own pedicures and (minimalist!) manicures!!

My hair appointments, however, are a treat I can't imagine living without!!  I've been with the same stylist for many years now, and since I'm always on for experimentation when it comes to cut and colour, I'm pretty sure I'm one of her favourite clients.  Let's face it, it must get rather boring taking "just a quarter inch off the ends" over and over again!!

Right now - as you may have noticed! - I'm working on letting my 'do grow out just a bit.  As much as I enjoy having someone else play around with my hair, I'm not exactly what you'd call adept...so there's real appeal in the idea of simply pulling it into a little ponytail on those days when I'm feeling all thumbs!!

P.S. Before I head off to my hair appointment, I'm stopping in at Fashion Should Be Fun for the Fun Fashion Friday linkup; hope to see you there as well!!

High and dry: suede knee boots, v-neck sweatshirt, cut-off denim skirt, and printed beanie

I might just be the only fashionista in all of Vancouver who doesn't own at least one pair of Wellingtons, dear readers!!

styling a raw-hemmed denim skirt with a sweatshirt, suede knee boots, and printed beanie

Even though I'm willing to admit that I occasionally regret this lack of waterproof footwear, I've never regretted my decision a couple of years ago to include some fabulous "fair weather only" boots in my collection!!

They're just the thing when I desperately want to wear a skirt - or dress! - but our fickle spring weather makes doing bare legs a bit too chilly for comfort.

And I'm sure you'll agree that while rubber boots are sometimes the most practical choice, they can't quite compete with the outfit-elevating properties of a pair in soft and sophisticated suede!!  ;)

Western flare: Paisley blouse, flare jeans, and cowboy hat

Another weekend come and gone without any purchases of the wearable variety, dear readers...must be some kind of record for me!!

styling flare jeans with a paisley blouse and cowboy hat

Truth be told, I haven't missed my previously very regular visits to the local mall all that much; and without the constant influx of new pieces, I'm getting a chance to really focus on creating interesting outfit combos with things I already own and love...like my fabulous flares and this paisley peasant top!!

And let's not forget my cowboy hat!!  Now that we're finally enjoying some warmer - and drier! -weather, my leather beanie's days are surely numbered...plus as far as the sun goes??  In my opinion, there's simply no better shield against those rays than a good ol' western-wear classic!!

There's probably plenty of April showers still in store for us...but you can bet that this girl is going to take all the sartorial advantage of spring that she can!!
