Hello yellow: boyfriend trousers, plaid button-front shirt, open-toe booties and patent yellow mini-bag

After a visit to one of our local animal shelters to see about a young ferret that needed some special help - more on that in a moment! - my hubby and I stopped in at our newest favourite Winners location for an afternoon shopping interlude...

...and obviously there was no possible way I could leave without making this adorable patent mini-bag mine!!  I'd been hoping for a while now to add a little somethin' somethin' in yellow to my accessories collection; after all, even a confirmed neutrals girl like me isn't completely immune to the charm of a sunny pop of colour!!

Paired with my tomboyish slate trousers and plaid sleeveless button-front - both recent purchases from Winners as well! - my latest ladylike acquisition proves once again that "opposites attract"...don't you agree??

Now - back to the ferret I mentioned above!!  The little guy was abandoned by his owners after they discovered he had bladder stones (just like our Fritz!) so I donated some funds and Robin blitzed a Facebook fundraiser...and he had his surgery yesterday!!  Best of all??  He's coming home with us later today as the newest member of our four-legged family!!  :D

Formula one: flare jeans, plaid flannel shirt, and mohair beanie

I've been challenging myself lately to really expand my "pant horizons"...but there's no doubt that there is comfort in returning to the reliability of a great pair of blue jeans!!  ;)

An outfit like this - with denim flares, an easy-fitting top, and some edgy accessories - is probably as close to a personal style uniform as I get; a go-to combination that never fails to make me happy.  In fact, I used to live in a (very) pared down variation of this ensemble well before I even understood that "personal style" was a thing!!

For every fashionista out there, I think developing a "look" to call one's own is about finding that perfect balance between the tried-and-true...and constant wardrobe experimentation.  It's an endlessly evolving process of visiting and re-visiting closet classics, trendy pieces...and everything in between.

And most important of all??  Personal style is about using our clothing choices to help us feel confident and powerful and ready for every challenge!!  Have you found that winning formula yet, dear readers??  I hope you'll share with us!!

Pant-alooza: wide-leg trousers, shrunken cardigan, skinny scarf, and leopard backpack

I seriously couldn't believe my eyes when I spotted these statement-making trousers on clearance at Winners a while back...how was it possible that some other fashionista hadn't snapped them up before me?!

It's certainly no secret to my regular readers that I looove me an afternoon spent at Winners (part of the T.J.Maxx group) because it's like a "treasure hunt" with every visit; probably not so ideal if you happen to be searching for a very specific piece...but tons of fun if you consider shopping a legitimate recreational activity like I do!!  ;)

This shade of greenish-grey is one of those "non-colours" that I'm particularly fond of...which means that these pants will play well with pretty much my entire wardrobe; but for their debut appearance, I opted to go for one of my trademark head-to-toe neutral combos...care of my cropped cardigan (worn as a top today) and studded leopard backpack.

And how cute is that skinny scarf worn as a pseudo-necktie??  Once upon a time, it was actually the belt for a tunic blouse - which I sadly no longer own - but I'm so glad that my personal style instincts told me to hang on to at least this little part of it!!

Eyes wide shut: striped dress, waist-tied plaid shirt, ankle-strap sandals, and a fedora

This has been both a very short and a very long week for me, dear readers...but in either case, to say I'm relieved that Friday is here once again??  A major understatement!!

You see, we've had road work going on in front of our condo every day  - or, more precisely, every night - since Monday...and the dusk 'til dawn scraping, grinding, thumping, and banging involved with removing the old asphalt and repaving the street surface has made sleep virtually impossible.

As most of us well know, the less shut-eye we've had the night before, the more endless the following day tends to feel...so the thought of a blissful weekend uninterrupted by the floor-shuddering, wall-rattling sounds of construction has got me really anxious to get this (slumber) party started!!

Still - while I might feel like the walking dead right now, at least my outfit-making mojo hasn't been adversely affected...this striped dress, plaid shirt, and jaunty fedora combo is definitely one of my most favourite looks yet!!  But just in case these bleary eyes of mine are deceiving me??  I'd love to hear what you think of my white and blue ensemble, too!!

Suiting up: Jumpsuit, striped tee, ankle-strap sandals, and leopard backpack

I know the jumpsuit has a reputation for being "inconvenient" - cue the washroom scenario! - but in my humble opinion??  When you opt to wear your layers under rather than over a wardrobe one-piece like this, it's really not such a big deal!!

In fact, if you look at it from a different perspective, coveralls can actually be one of those "pull it on and you're done" wonders...just add an appropriate bag and some great shoes (these ankle-strap heels have fast become a favourite of mine, especially considering my toe situation!) and you're pretty much set for anything!!

This particular jumpsuit doesn't have sleeves...but if it did, I'd even consider leaving the top down (ha ha!) and tying it around my waist for a different look; so with the first fall fashions - oh man, I do not want to think about fall quite yet! - making an appearance in some stores, I might have to keep my eyes open for a version with sleeves so I can give it a go!!

And in the meantime, if any of you are trying a jumpsuit for the very first time - or a different way of styling one - I'd love to hear how it worked out!!  :)

So sari: silk wrap skirt, graphic tank, and cut-out booties

Meet the newest member of my ever-evolving wardrobe, dear readers...this stunning wrap skirt fashioned from recycled saris!!

Robin and I took a little trip across the border to Bellingham a couple of weeks ago - I've really been missing Target since it pulled out of Canada! - and while we were there, we obviously had to cruise through the neighbourhood mall as well!!  ;)

Turns out that Target was rather a disappointment this time around (not a single item I wanted was in stock!) but we discovered the Earthbound Trading Company...and I fell totally in love with the shop's eye-popping selection of bohemian-inspired clothing, jewellery, and accessories.

As tempting as it was, the entire boutique did not end up coming home with me - I cringe to think of the duty I would have had to pay! - but this vision in layered silk??  It was simply too pretty to leave behind!!

Bright idea: denim shift dress, skinny jeans, espadrilles, and striped hobo bag

Between my denim tunic, skinny jeans, and black espadrilles, there really isn't a whole lot of colour going on in this sweet ensemble of mine...but when I opted to add a punchy tote to the mix??  Suddenly, it was like - whoa, nelly!!

styling a denim tunic with skinny jeans, Zara espadrilles, and a striped hobo bag

I'll be honest - it's a challenge to style truly "summery" looks when the weather refuses to play along; especially for a girl like me who prefers a palette of black, white, and neutrals for most of the year as it is.

Not that neutrals can't a summer outfit make; my tube skirt and t-shirt combo from last week is a study in varying shades of beige...but totally season-appropriate (although I do admit to using a bag to add a pop of colour there as well!!)

Still, I'm sure most of us will agree that summertime truly is the perfect time to add some brighter looks to our wardrobe repertoires; so I'm glad I ignored my initial impulse to stay "in neutral" today...and went with something a bit more vibrant instead!!

Toeing the line: peasant-style blouse, slouchy cargos, and reptile pumps

With the trauma my poor toe was recently subjected to, it's a good thing that my hubby and I had these photos "in the can" already...because there's no way I'll be wearing pumps for the foreseeable future!!

But I'm actually surprised by the heel height that I've been able to get away with since my little accident; as long as the shoes are open-toed - so that my injured appendage doesn't get totally smooshed in front - I've been managing way more than just flats!!

And who would have known that Robin had such mad bandaging skills?!  By the time he has me all fixed up every morning, his wrap job is hardly noticeable...for which I'm eternally grateful, because being the big baby that I am about all things medical (weird, huh, for someone that works at a veterinary clinic?) I have a "problem" with bandages, as well!!

Something I don't have a problem with??  This ├╝ber-feminine, scoop-necked peasant blouse that I picked up at Winners a couple of months ago.  It's a nice little nod to the off-shoulder trend that's still in full force for the summer - without being quite as challenging to wear.  Or am I the only one that finds those elastic necklines pretty to look at...but pretty darn impractical for real life?!

Foot patrol: plaid slipdress, denim jacket, and western-style mules

I can't believe it, dear readers...but I've managed to injure my foot!!  Again!!

styling a plaid slipdress with a denim jacket and western-inspired suede mules

My legs and feet have been my Achilles heel - pardon the pun! - for about as long as I can remember.  I've had my ankle accidentally slammed in a car door by my dad and gruesomely impaled on a screen door by the wind; and I once somehow managed to get my baby toe caught in porch glider (don't ask!!)

The most serious, of course, was my broken foot and the resultant DVT two years ago; the side effects of that are something that I'll be dealing with for the rest of my life.  Luckily, this current injury isn't nearly so bad...although it was rather dramatic; my Macbook slipped out of my hands while I was FaceTiming my parents, dropped onto my foot, and popped one of my nails right off!!  So gross!!

Thank goodness that Robin was home, because our livingroom floor instantly looked like a scene out of a horror movie...and I am ridiculously squeamish.  At least the pain has receded to a much more tolerable level by now; but I'm obviously going to need to be rather selective about my footwear choices for the next few weeks!!
