Shake it up: how to make a sweater and leggings not boring

I sure hope you don't mind, dear readers...but I've got yet another new piece to show you today!!  Isn't this fringy poncho-sweater hybrid the cutest?!

It was actually my hubby who convinced me to try it on - and take it home! - during one of our regular visits to Winners a while back, and I'm so glad he did; it's the perfect easy (and wonderfully cozy) knit to throw on for an afternoon when the complexities of layering just feel like "too much"!!  ;)

And while we're on the subject of easy??  My hair is technically still short...but ever since it's been long enough to pull back, I've really started to appreciate that ubiquitous "blogger bun" as a cute 'do option when I don't want to mess around with my blowdryer or flatiron!!

An ensemble like this is my answer to everyone who questions whether an outfit can be both comfortable and stylish.  Often, it's not about the pieces themselves - after all, a basic sweater and leggings is honestly pretty boring! - but the detail in those pieces (like fringe and a leather-like finish) that end up making all the difference!!  As always...I'm looking forward to hearing what you think!!

P.S. Have a safe and happy Halloween everyone!!  :D

Photo bomb: faux-fur bomber jacket, floral blouse, slouchy pants, and platform booties

While bomber jackets have been having a sartorial "moment" for a while now, somehow I wasn't able to find one that really felt right for me...until I came across this cutie at Forever 21, that is!!

My regular visitors certainly know by now that I'm a total sucker for pieces with texture; and this plush little coat with its contrasting faux-leather trim has that in spades!!  Plus - even if "basic brown" wasn't all kinds of trendy right now - that delicious shade of chocolate is total catnip for a neutrals-loving fashionista like me!!  ;)

But I am working hard at including a bit more colour in my outfit arsenal...so today I opted to layer my brand new jacket over this pretty maroon floral blouse; the subtle contrast adds a perfect touch of interest, don't you think??

Have you tried out the bomber trend yet, dear readers??  And are you embracing the resurgence of brown...or hating it??  As always, I'm looking forward to your comments!!

Segue: vegan leather vest and leggings, wedge booties, and long cardigan

Well, there's another weekend come and gone!!  Somehow, Saturday and Sunday are by far the "shortest" days of every week...aren't they, dear readers?!

Outfit inspiration c/o Monika Faulkner - vegan leather vest and leggings with wedge booties and a long cardigan

Besides catching up on some sleep (a weekend non-negotiable, in my opinion!) Robin and I managed to squeeze in a ferret playdate with friends-slash-fellow-pet-parents, a movie date (we saw "The Girl on the Train") and some extra FaceTime with my parents in Toronto...since my sister was visiting them from New Brunswick, it was like a two-for-one!!

We even managed to get out and enjoy a little bit of unexpected sunshine!!  Aside from the "storm-that-really-wasn't" that had been in the forecast for Vancouver last weekend, I have to say our transition into autumn has been rather pleasant so far; fingers crossed that the Farmer's Almanac got it right and we really do end up being Canada's hotspot this winter!!

As for the movie??  I don't know how the screenplay compares to the actual book - since I haven't read it! - but I'm giving the cinematic version two thumbs up!!  And I know Robin does, too; he made it through the late show without falling asleep...which is his highest compliment!!  ;)

Taking a stand: styling cropped flares with a white sweater, platform heels, and a fedora

As an enthusiast of fashion and personal style, I can appreciate the endless parade known as "trends" even if I'm not always a fan of every next big thing.

Outfit inspiration c/o Monika Faulkner - cropped flare jeans styled with a white sweater, platform heels, and a felt fedora

I think most of us will agree that some trends are easy to fall instantly in love with...while others might take a bit longer to find their way into our hearts (cropped flares, I'm talking about you!!)  But one trend that I really can't stand - or understand! - is athletic shoes worn with absolutely everything!!

In my opinion, running shoes (or trainers or whatever you want to call them) have no redeeming qualities; they're just out and out ugly!!  I've seen so many otherwise adorable/chic/cool outfits "ruined" in those last few sartorial inches; can't we leave the gym shoes in the gym where they belong...and get back to doing pretty on the street??  (I will make an exception for Converse, though; they have a quirky charm that works well with denim or a cute summer dress!!)

So, dear readers - let me know if you're with me in ditching the athletic shoe trend...and definitely check out my Fabulous Footwear board on Pinterest for inspiration; I promise there isn't a single pair of sneakers in the bunch!!  If, on the other hand, you wanna have a crack at convincing me of the nuances of Nikes worn with an evening gown, then argue away!!  ;)

Stormy: How to style a colour-blocked sweater and slouchy cargo pants

So - after living in fear of the three back-to-back storms (aka torrential rain and hurricane-force winds!) that were predicted for Vancouver over the past few days, I'd say we came through with flying colours!!

My biggest concern was losing WiFi - hey, this girl's gotta get her blog posts out on schedule! - but we were lucky that our neighbourhood wasn't affected by any of the power outages that always seem to go hand-in-hand with windstorms around here.

In fact, Robin and I took advantage of the average person's instinct to stay home and "hunker down" by making the trip out to Vancouver's massive new outlet mall for the second Saturday in a row!!  We figured it wouldn't be quite the circus it was last weekend for the Grand Opening celebrations...and we were right; I'm not sure if it was the stormy weather or because the novelty had already worn off, but the crowds were considerably easier to wrangle!!  ;)

And in case you're wondering, dear readers??  Yes!!  I did manage to snag some great deals...three new pairs of shoes, to be exact!!  Of course they'll all be making an appearance on the blog very soon; but in the meantime, I need to bribe my hubby into adding another shelf to my closet to store them!!  Any ideas?!

Pattern play: pencil skirt, floral blouse, moto vest, and platform booties

I mentioned a few weeks back that I'd outfitted myself with pretty much an entire new wardrobe for this fall/winter season...and today I couldn't resist wearing three of my recent purchases all in one ensemble!!

Monika Faulkner styles a patterned pencil skirt with a floral blouse, moto vest, and platform booties

As per my usual styling MO, there's not a lot of colour going on in this pencil skirt, blouse, and moto vest combo - it's variations of maroon and mossy green - but I do have some major pattern and texture happening!!  The floral top and geometric skirt were actually spoils from two separate shopping excursions...but I knew right away that these pieces would work like a charm together!!

While I'm sort of obsessed with black and white, I'd have to say that shades of olive are next on my "favourite colours" list...so this edgy faux-leather vest totally lured me in when I spotted it at Forever 21!!  And the finishing touch??  It just had to be my cuddly, sheepskin clutch!!

Good thing that I seized the opportunity to wear this outfit when I did, 'cause Vancouver is on a storm watch from now until Monday!!  No snow (of course!) but the weather people are predicting a whole lot of rain and wind for the next four days.  Fingers crossed that our power and WiFi don't go down...or it's gonna be a very quiet weekend around here!!  ;)

Ocean view: how to style a summer slip dress for autumn

Even though I'm not exactly the "outdoorsy" type - I'll take hiking the local shopping mall over hiking a mountain trail any day - there's definitely something to be said for an afternoon drive to enjoy the splendour that is Canada's West Coast!!

Monika Faulkner styles a patterned wrap-front slip dress over a turtleneck and grey skinny jeans

Lululemons and athletic shoes are not an option for my kind of road trip, though...it's high heels all the way for this girl!!  And while it might make an impromptu stroll on the beach a little precarious, today the views (and a perfect photo op!) simply couldn't be denied!!

The striped turtleneck and my grey skinny jeans actually looked really cute on their own - with the help of my major footwear, of course! - but for today's vehicular adventure I opted to up the style ante juuust a bit more....

filigree earring, french-braided hair

...by playing the layering game with this patterned, wrap-front slip dress!!  I think the surprise of some denim peaking out with every stride takes this look from merely pretty to pretty sweet, don't you agree??  As always, I'm looking forward to your comments!!

P.S. A very Happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian readers!!

Open season: styling a red plaid tunic with flare jeans and an olive moto vest

We're celebrating Thanksgiving here in Canada this Monday, dear readers...and while a long weekend is always a treat, it's not the only reason I'm excited to get this particular one started!!

Monika Faulkner styles a red plaid tunic with flare jeans and an olive moto vest

A HUGE new shopping mall has opened in Vancouver!!  Woohoo!!  I'm totally stoked to explore a bunch of shops that I'm unfamiliar with - hold on, Saks Off 5th, I'll be there soon! - as well as tried-and-true favourites like Winners and Forever 21.

The only hitch??  Apparently, Starbucks won't be available to serve up my go-to grande soy extra-hot no water chai latte until November; a rather serious oversight on their part, if you ask me...but I'm willing to forgive if the rest of my experience lives up to expectations!!  ;)

Of course you'll be receiving a full report next week - including an accounting of any new wardrobe acquisitions that I happen to make!!  In the meantime, I'd love to hear if you have anything special planned for this weekend...whether it's a long one or not!!
