Details, details - styling a faux-vest with patchwork skinnies and ivory booties

Looking to add some "lux" to a simple jeans-and-sweater combo??  Then may I suggest a layer of faux-fur fabulousness like this knee-length vest of mine!!  πŸ˜‰

I'd mentioned in my last post how I believe that "detail" can take an outfit from so-so to sublime...and a statement piece like this is exactly what I was talking about.  Plus, not only does the vest give my turtleneck and patchwork skinnies a major dose of texture...it's super cozy, too!!  (Bonus points for the pockets, am I right?!)

Of course, a really great pair of shoes can do an awful lot when it comes to elevating an ensemble, as well...and I'm not ashamed to say that I've had these ivory Vince Camuto booties on repeat recently!!

So by all means say "yes!" to the basics; but for a look that's truly worthy of a fearless fashionista, don't just leave it there...because even a routine run to the grocery store can be more fun when you include a little flair in what you wear!!

Theorem: how to wear wide-leg trousers, a star-patterned sweater, and a floppy hat

Have you ever given any thought to why certain sartorial ensembles look and feel sooo right, while other outfits are just...meh?!

Monika Faulkner outfit inspiration - styling a star-patterned sweater with wide-leg trousers, cross-body bag, and a floppy hat

Is it all about the fabulousness of the individual pieces??  Or the way, with a bit of creativity, "ordinary" items can come together for a greater good??  Or maybe it simply boils down to the attitude and confidence of the wearer?!

Monika Faulkner outfit inspiration - styling a star-patterned sweater with wide-leg trousers, cross-body bag, and a floppy hat

I'm going to take a stand and say that the very best outfits have virtually nothing to do with price tags and designer labels; there may have been a time when "big names" had a monopoly on superior fabrics and finishes...but I've shopped enough to know that nowadays, good and bad quality can be found across the board.

So my theory when it comes to winning at the game we call personal style??  In the end, it's three C's that make or break a "perfect" outfit:
  1. Careful shopping - pieces that fit well, have neat seams, and boast finishing details like top-stitching or pretty buttons will always look "special''...regardless of the actual price point.
  2. Creativity - never stop experimenting with different colour combinations, textures, and silhouettes; have fun!
  3. Confidence - it's impossible to look great if you don't feel great, so if your latest "experiment" doesn't have you smiling in the mirror, tweak the combo until it does!

Bare versus bear: Styling a faux-fur bomber jacket with a button-front denim jacket and lace-up booties

I'm not sure how long I'll still be able to get away with doing bare legs this season...but considering that we're already into the second half of November, I certainly can't complain if today was the last time!!

Topping off this denim skirt and turtleneck combo with my super-snuggly "teddybear" bomber did manage to ward off a good bit of the autumn chill, though; I've had this little jacket in fairly regular rotation recently...so don't be surprised if it pops up in another blog post very soon!!  And my edgy new laceup booties, too; I just debuted them here last Thursday and - surprise! - they're already on my feet again!!  πŸ˜„

But let's get back to the season for a moment, shall we??  Isn't it crazy that Christmas and the New Year are once more right around the corner??  I'll be honest - November is a month that I'm always happy to have in my rearview mirror (to my mind, it's kind of the "no man's land" of the calendar!) but I still can't believe that 2016 is this close to being over!!

Is the holiday spirit finding its way to you yet, dear readers??  And are you sartorially ready for winter...or are you - like me! - desperately squeezing a few more fall-inspired ensembles out of your wardrobe before "warm woollen mittens" take over??  As always, I'm looking forward to your comments!!

Converted: styling red plaid jeans with a chambray shirt and shawl-collar blazer

I absolutely adore today's cool outfit combo...so it's hard to imagine that there was a time (not really all that long ago!) when I wouldn't have dreamed of putting together an ensemble like this!!

And it's not the red-and-black plaid skinnies that I'd have doubted back then, either; these punk-inspired jeans have been a part of my closet for almost as long as I've been blogging, which is over three years now!!  Nope - the pieces that I once swore would never be a part of my wardrobe lexicon are a button-front shirt and a blazer...especially worn together!!

I'm still a confirmed "sweater girl" - I don't think that will ever change! - but my regular visitors know very well by now that I'm a huge advocate of experimenting when it comes to personal style!!  So with time and practice, I've learned to love a collared shirt and a suit-style jacket almost as much as my go-to jerseys and knits.

Of course it helps when the button-down in question is constructed of the softest chambray, and the blazer is nearly as stretchy and non-constricting as the comfiest sweater.  But when it comes to my footwear choice for such a tomboyish look??  I'm sticking with heels, dear readers...Converse simply can't compete with a pair of edgy lace-up booties like these, don't you agree??  πŸ˜‰

Shag me: how not to take fashion so seriously

This fringe-fest of a cardigan is probably the...um..."craziest?" piece that I have in my closet; but it's also one of my very favourites!!

Outfit inspiration c/o Monika Faulkner - styling a shaggy cardigan with a striped tee, patchwork skinnies, ivory booties, and a woolen beanie

Never mind that I shed like a husky at springtime whenever I have it on...there's just so much personality tangled up in all that woolliness!!  You certainly don't wear a sweater like this if you prefer to go unnoticed; and by the same token, it's the ideal way to show off a little sense of fashion fun!!

I'm the first to admit that I sometimes get rather caught up in the process of getting dressed for the day; after all, a #wardrobemaximalist has a whole lot of options for every given occasion, am I right??  Today I wanted a straightforward jeans-and-t-shirt ensemble for an afternoon of errands (which I may have zhuzhed up a bit with my gorgeous new Vince Camuto booties and cute mohair beanie!) so my cardi provided exactly the contrast I needed for a not-so-straightforward finishing touch!!

How about you, dear readers??  Do you always take your outfit combinations super seriously...or do you enjoy tossing in a touch of "craziness" every once in a while??  I'm looking forward to your input!!  πŸ˜Š

Parallels: how to give jeans and pumps a rock-and-roll edge

Am I the kind of girl to wear heels for an afternoon walk along the shore??  Apparently I am...especially when an awesome outfit photo op is at stake!!  ;)

Outfit inspiration c/o Monika Faulkner - striped tee, floral kimono, moto jacket, boyfriend jeans, maroon pumps

But then, who am I kidding??  I'm almost never in flats - as my regular visitors know very well by now (and which a scroll through my blog will quickly prove to the uninitiated!!)  Especially when I go tomboyish like today's boyfriend jeans and moto jacket combo; some women are feelin' fine in a masculine look from head to toe...but I always need the contrast of ΓΌber-feminine footwear to make the outfit seem "right" to me.

And this one-time high school nerd must have been "with the band" in some parallel universe...because I sure do love me a good rock-star-inspired ensemble!!  A long fringy scarf  - Γ  la Steven Tyler - would have made a perfect finishing touch, too; but this filmy floral kimono worn under my jacket creates a similar effect...and it works so well with these maroon suede pumps, don't you think??

With their layers and embellishments - like studs and the aforementioned fringe - I think rockerish outfits have the "wardrobe maximalism" that I talked about in my last blog post written all over them; and on that note I'd like to remind you, dear readers, to take part in my informal survey.  Do you believe "the more the merrier" when it comes to the contents of your closet??  Do you find that having tons of pieces to chose from is part of the fun of getting dressed...but that it's often challenging as well?? Let me know with a comment below!!

Poll day: Wardrobe maximalism and a moto vest styled with faux-suede culottes and ivory booties

The hows and whys of "capsule wardrobes" - curated collections were every item of clothing is carefully selected to work with everything else - have been a hot topic in the world of personal style for a while now...but what if that kind of sartorial minimalism isn't your thing??

Outfit inspiration c/o Monika Faulkner - striped blouse, faux-suede culottes, moto vest, and ivory booties

As a self-confessed shopaholic, keeping myself restricted to a few well-thought-out purchases every season would be torture; as would being limited to wearing what basically amounts to a "uniform" of sorts.  Sure, I could swap out yesterday's trousers for a skirt today, and trade a pair of pumps for some boots instead...but that just seems so boring when I can (and do!) have an entire smorgasbord of pieces to chose from instead!!

Of course, "wardrobe maximalism" has its challenges, too; sometimes it's hard to see the proverbial forest for the trees...meaning that outfits can take a little longer to figure out since there are just so darn many options at my fingertips!!  But all the ingredients are there to allow me to dress for every possible mood and every side of my personality; something I just can't imagine a mere "capsule" could accomplish.

From your lovely comments on my last post, I know that at least some of you share my passion for shopping...and probably have a similarly expansive closet to show for it!!  Do you sometimes struggle to come up with an ensemble to wear??  And is the challenge a worthwhile compromise, since "variety is the spice of life??"  Consider this an informal poll, dear readers (I'll tell you what it's all about later!) so I'd really love to hear from each and every one of you!!

P.S. These super sleek Vince Camuto booties??  You guessed it - they're new!!  :D

Shopaholic: camo shirt, faux-fur vest, skinny jeans, and lug-soled wedge booties

Okay - so I've certainly never kept it a secret that I love, love, love shopping.  Not much in this world makes me happier than the prospect of an afternoon spent at one of my favourite malls...and I say that without a drop of irony.

Outfit inspiration c/o Monika Faulkner - skinny jeans, camo shirt, faux-fur vest, Sorel booties, and leather beanie

But what might be a bit of a surprise??  While I rarely admit it, I do sometimes feel guilty that the pursuit of my next sartorial conquest makes up such a big part of my life.  I've never been motivated by the endorphin rush of a workout, and I'll have a drink maybe a couple of times a year...but that so-called "shopper's buzz" is a very real thing for this girl!!

Outfit inspiration c/o Monika Faulkner - skinny jeans, camo shirt, faux-fur vest, Sorel booties, and leather beanie

By any definition, I probably have a bit of a problem...an "addiction," if you will.  I don't really need another pair of shoes (aren't these new Sorel booties casual-outfit-catnip, by the way?) or skinny jeans (yes, my love has officially been re-kindled!) but it's just sooo satisfying to add yet another wardrobe wonder - or three! - to my walk-in closet!!  Plus - my one and only credit card??  It gets paid off every month.

So I'm asking you, dear readers - is it bad that I crave shopping the way some people crave cigarettes?? Are you just as obsessed with seeking out your next outfit acquisition as I am??  I await on those proverbial pins and needles for your response!!  ;)
