Border patrol: cargo pants with a lace-trimmed camisole and patterned kimono

How cool is this, dear readers...I am literally standing right on the border between Canada and the United States!!

The "Great White North" shares the globe's longest undefended border (a total of 5,500 miles!) with our neighbour to the south; but I'd never considered what that really meant until Robin and I, quite by accident when we were enjoying a recent Sunday afternoon drive, ended up here...on a road that follows along the absolute southernmost edge of Canada.

It's obviously a different story at official border crossings - with their Customs buildings and duty-free shops - but where we stopped to take these photos, there wasn't a fence or wall in sight...just the occasional steel and concrete marker.  At a time when "distrust" seems be the operative word in this world of ours, it was a genuinely nice thing to see!!

And on the outfit front??  The calendar says autumn starts tomorrow...so the days of breezy, warm-weather looks like this are very likely over until next year.  But one last "hurrah" in this casually pretty, pyjama-inspired camisole and kimono combo??  Don't mind if I do!!

Shopping Science: styling a graphic tank with a gingham skirt, ankle boots, and a fedora

As a fashionista who takes her shopping hobby very seriously (tee hee!) I've probably got pieces rotating in and out of my closet on an almost weekly basis - in with the new, out with the old! - but there are definitely items that manage to withstand the test of time as real wardrobe mainstays.

This graphic tank, for example??  I think it's been one of my go-to's for about fifteen years now!!  As my regular readers know, black and white is my absolute favourite colour palette; the "pop art" design adds a must-have bit of edge; and the mesh fabric is wonderfully breathable for summer, while also layering like a dream when cooler temperatures prevail.

Of course I always try to make purchases that I will love for the longterm; but with so many cute new sartorial options becoming available each season, I'll admit that I find it challenging to remain faithful to some of my stuff for very long...and I'm sure (um, I hope?) I'm not the only one who does!!

Practice makes perfect, as the saying goes; I'm still a huge advocate of experimenting when it comes to personal style, but I'm also starting to focus much more on those details that I know for sure will make a piece eminently "wearable" to me.  I'm determined to get this shopping thing down to a science yet!! πŸ˜‰

Fashion Foresight: a black floral top with a red striped trapeze dress, open-toe wedges, and a fedora

Moody florals and red are all over the fashion forecast for fall and winter...so I'd say I was right on the money with this mesh top and trapeze dress combo, dear readers!! πŸ˜‰

And while the bright sunshine could be a giveaway, what you can't actually see is the fact that it was crazy hot the afternoon we took these photos; probably around 90ΒΊF.  Not the kind of day when anyone would typically be thinking about autumn trends, that's for sure!!

So here's the spoiler - I picked these two pieces first and foremost for their heatwave wearability.  In fact, neither the top nor the dress are actually new; they're both Forever 21 purchases from several years ago.  As you know, I'm all for the thrill of the shopping hunt...but sometimes it's almost more satisfying when you find the look of the season already waiting right in your closet!!

Plus, you get to congratulate yourself on your superior style prognostication skills.  I don't know about those editors at Vogue and Elle, but it's pretty obvious that I already knew gothic flower prints and "all red everything" were going to be big for the upcoming season waaay back when I bought these pieces a couple of summers ago!!  πŸ˜

Tooth and Nail: houndstooth trousers with a skull-patterned tee, open-toe booties, and a felt fedora

Apparently I can't deny them any longer, dear readers - those inevitable "autumn vibes" have started creeping into my sartorial repertoire!!

Not that I haven't worn my go-to black pieces or my brown felt fedora throughout our steamy Vancouver summer...but these houndstooth trousers that I just brought home from H&M have "fall fashion" written all over them, don't you agree??

I often shy away from a fabric like tweed because it regularly goes hand-in-hand with a conservative, boardroom-ready silhouette that is so not me; but in this case, I convinced myself that the skinny, low-waisted fit keeps the pants from skewing too "corporate."  In fact, I couldn't resist giving them a bit of a punkish turn for their first time out by pairing them with this knotted-at-the-waist, skull-patterned tee.

The days for bare toes and bare midriffs are surely numbered now...but as long as the weather permits, I'm going to fight tooth and nail to ease into the new season as gently as I can!!

Turn the page: cropped flare jeans with a striped tank, denim vest, ankle boots, and a baker boy hat

Flipping the calendar to September never fails to leave me a little melancholy, dear readers; I know summer doesn't officially end for another couple of weeks...but now I'm past the point when I can fool myself into thinking it will last forever. 😞

And looking back at our stay-cation pics is making the end of the season even tougher to face!!  While our weather forecast is predicting a milder-than-average autumn for Canadians, the days when Robin and I can cruise around in the Solstice with the top down are definitely numbered now.

This round-trip tour through farm country all the way to Hope, and then back home again via a mountainside highway, has been our favourite drive by far; the views are amazing...and we've discovered a brand new photo-op-slash-rest-stop each time out.

I'm so hoping we can squeeze one or two more road trips - and road trip outfits! - into these last few weekends of summer.  After all, I've got at least one or two more hot weather ensembles I still want to wear before sweater season sets in!!

Boardwalking: styling a striped pencil skirt with a white patterned blouse, white sunnies, and white ankle-strap sandals

I think this might have been the very first time in four years of blogging that Robin and I ever managed a photoshoot in the morning, dear readers!!

Monika Faulkner outfit inspiration - styling a striped pencil skirt with a patterned shirt and studded ankle-strap sandals

We had friends invited over to our place for an afternoon barbecue, which meant that pics and picking up groceries had to happen earlier in the day...much earlier than we're accustomed to.  Unless it's truly unavoidable, weekends are all about sleeping in around our place!! πŸ˜‰

That being said, it was rather nice to be outside enjoying fresh air and sunshine at an hour we're usually still home yawning and contemplating how we're going to spend the day.  But I considered it a bit of a bonus that we didn't have to make a second pit stop just so that we could take advantage of the beautiful floral displays at Westminster Quay for our photos...since my favourite specialty market is located right at the end of the boardwalk!!

Aside from the flowers, the eagle-eyed among you may also have noticed a palm tree or two.  While they don't grow nearly as big as they do in California, they can actually be found all around Vancouver...and I can only imagine that they're enjoying this record-breaking hot and sunny summer weather even more than I am!!
