Shopping Science: styling a graphic tank with a gingham skirt, ankle boots, and a fedora

As a fashionista who takes her shopping hobby very seriously (tee hee!) I've probably got pieces rotating in and out of my closet on an almost weekly basis - in with the new, out with the old! - but there are definitely items that manage to withstand the test of time as real wardrobe mainstays.

This graphic tank, for example??  I think it's been one of my go-to's for about fifteen years now!!  As my regular readers know, black and white is my absolute favourite colour palette; the "pop art" design adds a must-have bit of edge; and the mesh fabric is wonderfully breathable for summer, while also layering like a dream when cooler temperatures prevail.

Of course I always try to make purchases that I will love for the longterm; but with so many cute new sartorial options becoming available each season, I'll admit that I find it challenging to remain faithful to some of my stuff for very long...and I'm sure (um, I hope?) I'm not the only one who does!!

Practice makes perfect, as the saying goes; I'm still a huge advocate of experimenting when it comes to personal style, but I'm also starting to focus much more on those details that I know for sure will make a piece eminently "wearable" to me.  I'm determined to get this shopping thing down to a science yet!! 😉

  1. I am loving that skirt. I like the way to tied it all together with that belt too.

I am almost too cautious when I shop. I tend to buy things with the attitude of "how long can I keep it?" Before I started working in NYC where the office dress code is more businesslike (and the women are more fashion forward), I was keeping clothes for 10 year or even more! Of course money is a big issue with me. Money and wardrobe longevity kind of go hand in hand. I know I could spend more time in the "fast fashion" arena, but my body type often isn't flattered by the cheaper fabrics and construction. (Of course if I lost the weight, this wouldn't be such an issue.)

I have solved the problem somewhat with using a rental service. I decided if my size is going to be fluctuating for a while, I should avoid committing to anything. A rental service keeps a few pieces constantly rotating in and out. The system isn't perfect though. They tend to send me a lot of similar styles.

    1. A clothing rental service sounds like a dream come true, dear Rachel...as long as they send you pieces that you enjoy wearing and that work with your office dress code. But if they keep sending you variations of the same things all the time, then that kind of defeats the purpose, doesn't it?? I mean, the whole point (for me, at least!) would be to have the latest trends at my disposal...without having to make a big financial investment!! I guess you might need to rely on the rental agency for more "basic" pieces like trousers and jackets...and then add some flare with a few of-the-moment purchases from Zara or H&M every season!! ;)
