Block party: styling a beachy maxi dress with a denim vest and head scarf

Woohoo!!  Maybe we’re going to have a “real” summer here in Vancouver after all!!  🌞

This particular day was the hottest of the year so far…and I totally went for it, sartorially speaking, in a breezy beach dress that was my souvenir from our vacation in California four years ago.  So what if the calendar says we have another two weeks to go before the season officially begins?!

It’s worth mentioning an important part of this look that you can’t actually see…I’m absolutely slathered in sunblock.  I am certainly not the typical “sun bunny” who loves to tan; in fact, I’m upset if I (accidentally) get even the littlest bit of colour.  But I’ve been complimented by several doctors on the condition of my skin…so I’ll take that as proof that my vigilance has been worthwhile!!

And what about you, dear readers??  Do you always try for a tan come summertime…or do you stay “under wraps” like I do when the weather warms up??  I’m curious to know whether bronzed skin is finally falling out of favour…or if it still holds that 20th century allure.

Don't worry what the calendar says. If the weather says "summer dress", wear one! I love summer dresses and I am waiting for NY weather to be consistently warm so I can break out the skirts and wear it every day.

I am pretty vigilant with the sunscreen. I never tan intentionally. However, when summer comes, I do tend to have a tan just because the amount of time I spend outdoors in the sunshine tends to override the amount of sunscreen I use. I could wear more clothing, but love baring skin too much in hot weather. Don't even talk to me about covering up while I'm out swimming. I'm of partial Italian extraction, so I am capable of tanning. I often joke when I come back from vacation and everyone at work compliments me on my tan, I get insulted they are happy I am putting myself at higher risk for cancer.

I know a couple of thirty-somethings that LIVE to tan, dearest Rachel…the darker, the better. One of them has now realized that she's done some irreparable damage to her skin, so she's finally going the hat and sunblock route. Applying SPF is a pain in the butt (probably the only thing about summer that I don't like!) but it's SO important; do your best to keep it up!! XOXO
