Pop up: an alternative to the cute but uncooperative off-the-shoulder trend

So – I can’t possibly be the only one who thinks those “off the shoulder” tops and dresses we’re still seeing everywhere are flattering in theory, but waaay difficult to wear…can I??

Just to be clear, I’m not referring to this striped button-front blouse that I’m debuting today – which is the perfect cheat because of those skinny straps – but rather to the kind of top that has elastic around the shoulders to keep it in place…elastic that pops up over your shoulders the second you try to lift a Starbucks cup to your lips (for example). 😜

There’s no getting around the fact that what’s pretty in pictures doesn’t always work very well in real life.  After all, who wants to be seen constantly tugging their neckline back into place??  It brings to mind the zillions of ill-advised brides who spend their wedding days yanking up strapless gowns for fear of a wardrobe malfunction; not only is it horribly distracting…but it’s the exact opposite of flattering.

Do these sartorial challenges have you simply opting out of all things off-the-shoulder and strapless, dear readers??  Or have you discovered the secret to keeping such slippery silhouettes in place??  As always, I’m looking forward to hearing what you have to say!!

I'm waiting for the off-shoulder trend to die. It's so unfair to us generously endowed women. Sure I could wear a strapless bra, but a strapless bra that would actually hold me in is like wearing a steel cage. I'll do a cold shoulder as long as it covers my bra straps. Too bad because I have seen off-shoulder in cool patterns. I love yours. I'm also glad I got married before strapless dresses were the only ones out there! The wedding industry is cruel.

Ah yes…strapless bras are in a league of their own, aren't they Rachel?? How can we put a man on the moon, but are apparently incapable of inventing a strapless bra that REALLY stays in place?! P.S. "Cold shoulder" tops are another great cheat when it comes to getting that off-the-shoulder look!! You go girl!! XOXO

I am totally with you on the strapless look! So pretty in pictures but I do not have the gumption to wear this style. A few months ago I found a beautiful top made like your great one, with narrow straps. Luckily I am not that big so a strapless bra is fine for me with this.
    Love those shoes too!!!!

Yess! I couldn't agree more, those off-the-shoulder tops are everything but practical.
I absolutely love this "cheat" version! 🙂
