So last week, when I was invited by the Fab 40’s collective to take part in their “denim cut-offs” styling challenge, I opted to go with a cut-off skirt instead of shorts because – honestly? – shorts really aren’t my thing. But we don’t call ourselves “fearless fashionistas” around here for nothing, and so I promised myself (and you, dear readers!) that I’d give those classic jean cut-offs a try after all…and today was that day!!
Except that I didn’t quite go the “classic” route, did I?! Cut-off shorts are traditionally much shorter than the bermuda length that I went with here; but given my penchant for wearing serious heels with even the most casual of outfits, I had to be careful not to drift into Daisy Duke territory!! 😉 Besides – after having been relegated to the sartorial shadows for quite some time, bermuda shorts are enjoying rather a nice moment in the “street style” spotlight right now…so it seemed like the perfect time to take the trend for a test drive!!
Shorts that hit around the knees have a reputation for appearing frumpy…but I’m convinced that it’s almost always the accompanying footwear that’s to blame. I’m not a fan of the whole athletic-shoes-with-everything look as it is; but in this case, I’d definitely suggest staying clear of anything even remotely orthopedic. Not that you necessarily need to go quite as, um, dramatic as I did, of course; espadrilles or strappy sandals with a more moderate heel would be awesome options. Or maybe you want to rock the whole “geek chic” thing by pairing birkenstocks with your bermudas; as I said – “fearless” is the name of the game!!
My own silver platform boots always make quite a statement all on their own, so I decided to keep the rest of my look kinda simple by styling my denim bermuda shorts with a white tank top, grey felt beret, and leopard-patterned backpack. Okay – the “leopard” part might not exactly qualify as simple…but I don’t think you’ll blame me for liking the combo, am I right?! 😄
